Orlando, Fla. — The Alabama all-girl cheerleading team won the national championship.
On January 19, 2020, The University of Alabama All-Girl cheerleading team won the National Championship in Division 1A at the 2020 UCA College Cheerleading National Championship. This was the second time in program history for the all-girl squad. Alabama’s Co-ed team also brought home a trophy as runner-up in their division.
“To win as a team was the best feeling we could have ever asked for, all the hard work and long practices had finally paid off,” said sophomore all-girl member, Olivia Langley.
“Our team dynamic this year was different. We weren’t worried about any other teams, winning, or about the results. We were only focusing on doing the routine to the best of our ability section by section and giving the crowd something to remember.”
The first time the Alabama all-girl cheerleading team competed at the UCA College National’s was back in 2014. The team won their first national championship title the following year, in 2015.
This year’s win marks the fifth national championship title for the program, with the co-ed team bringing the gold back to Tuscaloosa in 1984, 2011, and 2015.
Since their win in 2015, The University of Alabama all-girl team has placed top-three five times at the UCA National Championship, which is held at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla.
“Alabama had an impressive routine this year, not only because their routine was compromised with difficult components. They made it look easy and executed all of their skills when it mattered. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and compassion to perform an almost perfect routine, and they were able to do that,” Oklahoma State University all-girl alumni, Melissa Marie said.
“You can tell that the Alabama program will continue to have a lot of success in the coming years as they take home the 2020 UCA championship in the all-girl division, one of the most difficult divisions at the competition.”
